Handle With Care
Migration. Immigration. Refugees.
Every day, these topics are written about, spoken about, and debated—whether in the press, on social media, or in everyday conversations—often through numbers and statistics.
Since 1990, the Documentation Center and Museum on Migration in Germany (DOMiD) has been collecting testimonies of migration history with the goal of establishing a museum. Objects, photos, documents, and interviews all serve as reminders of the experiences and life paths of migrants and their descendants—the people behind the numbers, statistics, and controversies.
Their collection carries many emotions: pride, melancholy, joy, but also sorrow, nostalgia, fear, anger, and shame. These feelings are reflected in the collection’s many voices, resonating with both curators and visitors alike. The exhibition Handle With Care invites you to explore a small selection of objects and documents from the DOMiD collection—perhaps for the first time, or in a new light.
Step inside and encounter the hidden stories and emotions. They may feel unfamiliar, or they may feel close to home. They might spark memories, or they might offer new perspectives on familiar topics and situations. Let them take you on a journey—let them surprise you. You are warmly welcome here. And when you leave, take these stories with you—perhaps even share your own. Because to tell is to remember…
