Time Tunnel

As part of the CityLeaks Urban Art Festival, the project Chargesheimer Tunnel staged oversized photographs by photographer Karl-Heinz Chargesheimer as a time tunnel. For one evening, projections onto an installation of plant-covered tunnels transformed Körnerstraße into an open-air photo museum, where what are likely the only surviving film documents of the artist became a visual and thematic backdrop, intertwining past and future.

Streets are the social hubs of our cities today, their public life and use reflecting our collective mindset and embodying the quality of urban life itself. In this spirit, the Chargesheimer Tunnel brought historical images to the streets of Cologne, journeying back in time to transport scenes from the mid-20th-century life of the famous street Unter Krahnenbäumen into the present-day vibrancy of Körnerstraße in Ehrenfeld.
